Mithālī Parenting Principals as a Basis of Child Development & Empowerment

ABSTRACT

Human education begins at home via effective parenting. Therefore, one simple question arise: what are the principles of successful Muslim parenting in Malaysia? Thus, the research aims to explore the principles of parenting from the Muslim family perspectives using grounded theory approach in qualitative research design. Rich data from the interview, document analysis, and observation were analysed using thematic analysis. Finally, nine principles emerged. They were: positive role model, cultivate knowledge culture, strong religiosity, high responsibility, balance act between mutual love and discipline, building child resistance, optimise child potential, parenting as a collective effort and the destiny is with Allah. The parenting principles are fundamental for the parents as a clear guideline for child development and empowerment.

ABSTRAK

Media sosial menjadi medium utama untuk berkomunikasi pada masa kini. Kertas kerja ini bertujuan untuk meneroka penggunaan media sosial dan implikasinya terhadap remaja generasi Z di Malaysia. Kajian kuantitatif ini dilakukan melalui pengedaran borang selidik terhadap 750 orang remaja generasi Z di Malaysia. Dalam pada itu, kajian kes turut dilaksanakan terhadap 20 orang remaja generasi Z yang sedang menuntut di Universiti Awam. Hasil kajian mendapati, media sosial digunakan secara meluas oleh remaja generasi Z dengan pelbagai tujuan. Selain itu, penggunaan media sosial didapati bukan hanya membawa implikasi yang positif tetapi juga negatif kepada remaja. Oleh itu, kertas kerja ini juga turut membincangkan strategi khusus untuk membangunkan remaja secara holistik dalam konteks penggunaan media sosial dengan mengambil kira implikasinya terhadap generasi Z di Malaysia.

The Definition of Z Generation: A Systematic Review Perspective

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to 1) perform a systematic review of studies examining the definition of Z Generation, and 2) make recommendations based on the findings. The systematic review was limited to the definition of Z Generation in the context of human being. Literature searches were conducted using predefined keywords in four databases. A total of 113 potential papers were identified using four search engines: Ebscohost, Sage Publication, ProQuest and Emerald Insight. The analysis of the articles or literature review focus on the definition of Z Generation by three perspectives: birth year, special characteristics and other names of Z Generation. The definition of Z Generation by birth year ranged from 1990 until today. They born and grow up during the proliferation of web 2.0 and digital technology. They are also called as Millenials, Digital Natives, Google Generation, Next Gen, DotNets, iPod, Xbox and New Silent Generation. Z Generation is the young, energetic and multi-talented generation. Special program should be planned for them to empower their capacity and unleash their potential.

Simposium Kebudayaan dan Kerjasama Indonesia – Malaysia 2015, SKIM XIV 2015 will be more meaningful to researchers in many ways with the establishment of a joint cooperation with the Malaysian Social Institute (ISM). The theme “University for the ASEAN Community: Knowledge-Based Prosperity, Harmony and Sustainability” is chosen, in line with the common desire to strengthen the communities of the two nations and to improve the social policies of the respective nations through the dissemination of knowledge. The role of the university should be relevant with the aspiration of the local community and thus, play a positive role in the development of the country and the nation. Hence, SKIM XIV will be a platform for scholars from different academic areas of expertise to present new ideas, share new findings, and stimulate discussions and new ideas based on the conference sub-themes to find a solution to empower the communities of the two nations and to improve their well-being.
